RODMAN STAFF SPOTLIGHT: Byrun Reed

Byrun Reed

Meet Byrun Reed, a reference librarian who has been at RPL for seven years.

Here are some things to know about Byrun:

What is your favorite part of your job?

Helping patrons find information they need. Working with a fun and creative staff, and creating programs that keep patrons coming back.

What is your favorite book or author?

Harvey Pekar “American Splendor” comic book series, Kurt Vonnegut, Allen Ginsburg, and lately George Saunders.

Who is your favorite musical artist?

Bob Dylan.

Are you a fan of any pro sports team?

Detroit Red Wings.

Do you collect anything?

Records! I roughly have about 1,000. Much to the dismay of my wife.

Do you have any pets?

I have three dogs; Jack Russell/Blue Heeler Norman (which means he’s completely insane 24-7. Barks at leaves).  Rosie, a German Shepard/Pit Bull. She’s 14 years old and always tired. Kaya, a Labradoodle. Almost a year old. As big as a horse, also barks at leaves. Ignores all personal space, wants all the scratches.

Do you have any hobbies?

I collect records, mostly classical, country, and bluegrass.  I spend a lot of time reading about my favorite artists or musicians.  Novice guitar and mandolin player. Also editing wife’s “Honey-Do” list.

What is something people would be surprised to know about you?

I used to deliver musical equipment (amps, keyboards, drums) to touring musicians. I’ve worked with Ray Charles, James Brown, Little Richard, Van Halen, and Los Lobos to name a few. Was given a big hug by Mary Wilson of The Surpremes for shining a flashlight on the floor backstage. It was really dark, and she was about to trip over cables on the floor.

What would be the title to your autobiography?

Oh Great, This Guy Again?
