Calling All Bird Lovers

Bird

Rodman Public Library and the Canton Audubon Society are calling all bird lovers.

Anyone with an interest in taking up birdwatching as a hobby are invited to attend “Birding is For Everyone” at Rodman Public Library on July 19.

The free public program created and presented by the Canton Audubon Society, a chapter of the National Audubon Society, is intended as an introduction to birdwatching for people of all ages, experiences and backgrounds.

Birding is an activity that can be enjoyed by almost anyone in almost any location without special equipment or skills and the program addresses many topics that can enhance this nature-oriented activity, no matter how experienced someone is.

Registration is required at rodmanlibrary.evanced.info/signup.

Laura Dornan, Connie Rubin and Chuck McClaugherty will present an audio-visual program in the Main Auditorium of Rodman Public Library at 4:00 p.m. on July 19.  Following the program, at approximately 5:00 p.m. and weather permitting, a short bird walk along the Iron Horse trail just outside the library will be offered.  A few binoculars and field guides will be available for sharing.

Rubin has been birding for 12 years, beginning to watch birds from a bedroom window with her husband, Howard, as he underwent periodic cancer treatments. After retiring from the Stark County Park District in 2013, Rubin’s vacations became trips to birding festivals throughout the U.S. She has also visited Panama and Portugal in her quest to see new species.

Doman has been a birder for 35 years, beginning when she was a volunteer naturalist at Quail Hollow. Most of her fondest birding memories involve introducing kids and adults to birds. In recent years, she has learned to find new ways to help those with health and mobility issues to enjoy the hobby.

McClaugherty, a retired professor of ecology from the University of Mount Union, has enjoyed birding most of his life and has not missed a day of birding in more than three years.  He loves to share his pleasure and enjoyment of nature with others.
